Jake Mohan spent twenty years playing drums for bands in Minneapolis, Chicago, and his native Iowa before going solo as The Dependent Clause. His mostly instrumental, loop- and sample-based music still features his primary instrument while introducing ambient, electronic, and experimental elements influenced by artists such as Tortoise, Brian Eno, Stars of The Lid, and Boards of Canada. His debut album XL arrived in 2016, a pastiche of electronics, live drums, and found sounds. Abiding Island followed in early 2018, featuring more expansive compositions and guest vocalists such as Mohan's former bandmate Phil Moore (Bowerbirds, Tuskha).
